USI to Vote on Same-Sex Benefits

The board of trustees for the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday will vote on a proposal to extend benefits to same-sex domestic partners. Our partners at the Evansville Courier & Press report that trustees will meet at 2:30 p.m. in Carter Hall at USI's University Center, with an open discussion scheduled before trustees vote.

University President H. Ray Hoops tells the newspaper that USI is the only four-year public university in Indiana not to provide the benefits.

Those in opposition to the proposal include a local technology consulting company. In a letter asking officials to reject the plan, Keller Schroeder & Associates Inc. noted their support of the university with an annual scholarship.

In addition, a faculty member is seeking a plan that would extend domestic partner benefits beyond same-sex relationships to situations including employees caring for elderly or handicapped family members.
