ABAKALIKI—Minister of Works and Transport, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has directed the Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency; (FERMA) Olubunmi Peters to as a matter of urgency provide details of the level of dilapidation of the Abakaliki–Afikpo federal road that was being threatened by gully erosion.
Consequently, the FERMA MD has asked his field officers to ascertain the extent of damage on the road so as to carry out an immediate remedial action on the damaged portion of the road which links the South and Northern parts of Ebonyi State.
The Minister’s intervention followed representation made by the senate who visited the Akpoha section of the road where a deep gorge caused by a heavy down pour has worsened traffic to and from Abakaliki.
Chairman Senate committee on Aviation, who represents Ebonyi south senatorial district, Senator Anyim Ude had visited the damaged portion of the road and expressed dismay at the level of damage caused by floods on the road.
Senator Ude quickly took it up with the Minister of Transport and pleaded that something be done quickly since commuters now had to circumnavigate through Onitcha to get to Abakaliki and vice versa.
